View Full Version : Lost acceleration

I hauled my bike ('04 cbr600rr) up to Colorado and as soon as I got on it I could tell something was wrong. The throttle seems sluggish and it takes a couple seconds for it to put you back in your seat when you hit it. It takes a lot more gas to get going from a standing start. I replaced the air filter (which it needed anyways) but that didn't seem to help. Then, I noticed I was leaking gas and had a small hole in the fuel tank. Don't ask me how that happened. So I figured that must be my problem as it probably wasn't getting enough gas. So, I patched up the tank with JB Weld and the leak completly stopped but STILL it's slow. I'm thinking about replacing the spark plugs but was wondering, would the altitude have anything to do with this? I can still wheelie but it takes a lot more gas and much more effort. Anything else I could check or change out to to fix this? The weird thing is, it was working fine in Lincoln and only saw these problems once I got to Colorado. Maybe it's a coincidence? Anyone else experience lost acceleration when going to high altitude?

going down in altitude when we hauled my car to AZ made my fuel pump go out. altitude can do weird things because their is less oxygen up their. bet thats whats wrong

Higher elevation means less air. meaning same fuel flow with the low air. makes your bike run rich...usually in colorado you have to remap you ECU so you don't run rich. and then remap it when you get to normal elevation. this is why you are sluggish.

and colorado is just a shitty place so stay out of there. ;)

hmmm I've never remapped my ECU before. Would it be overly expensive and hard for me to do myself or should I take it to a shop? Which are probably backed up 50 bikes deep right now. :|

i don't think you can do it yourself unless you have a PCIII and i'm not sure you can map that by yourself i don't know much about remapping PCIII's but a shop has to do it. If your bike was carbed you could do it. but since its FI you can't.

i highly doubt youre going to have to "remap" your pcm. If that was the case then the honda factory would be putting multiple different "maps" in each bike depending on what state your in which isnt cost effective. so they probable used a matrix and a MAP sensor, (which is Manifold Absolute Pressure, not what hes talking about). depending on what reading the MAP sensor gets when the key is first flipped on determines the which block the pcm is going to run in. did you put gas in it before you went up there?

just find a buddy with another similar bike and ride his, the pcm is going to make up for the lack of air but it still may just be that shitty with the alititude, hard telling unless you can make a comparison....

It had gas in it before I left but I have filled up again here. What's pcm? Sorry, I'm pretty new to all this. Finding someone who will let me ride their bike down here might be hard. I don't know any riders here. I'm at over 6,000 feet, Lincoln's at 1,000 (give or take a few hundred feet). I don't know, I'm gonna be here for only about 4 weeks. I might check out a shop and see how much it is, otherwise I can just live with it until I get back to Lincoln. Hopefully it'll turn back to normal and if it does, then we'll know.

pcm, ecu, ecm---- all means computer, just depends on what side of the tracks youre from

high elevations are ghey, but i use to live there... i didnt read the whole thread but if you have a pcIII all you should have to do is re-map when you go up to high elevations, should fix your problem. i dont know if it works, but ive herd it does lol
